Wish Upon A Limo Ride
Just as adults are different and have different tastes and aspirations, so are kids. Some of the children whose lives are being threatened by cancer have asked to meet Rockets star Tracy McGrady, others want to travel to Ecuador's Galapagos Islands, while others want to join the Texas Longhorns cheerleading squad.
But, Houston teenager Abigail Castillo has her own unique wish. She wants to celebrate her 15th birthday, even if it means holding a coming-of-age party, known as a quinceañera, a year early. Quinceañera, drawn from the Spanish word for fifteen, is a celebration of a girls fifteenth birthday. It is a special occasion because it is when a girl becomes a woman. Hispanic girls all over the world celebrate this occasion. Although its origins are unknown, the quinceañera may have Aztec roots, according to some people. While, others say it is an outgrowth of the French cotillion, coming from when France ruled Mexico in the 1800s.
Abigail Castillo, who turned 14 last month, has had a battle with cancer since she was 7, but tonight her wish of experiencing her own quinceañera comes true. She will be the centre of attention as about 200 people and several businesses come together to ensure no matter what happens next, she has her day. It isn't just about wearing a custom-made dress, taking a limousine ride and dancing into the night, but taking a symbolic step toward being a young woman; with all she has endured since she was diagnosed seven years ago, Abigail knows about growing up early.
The Make-A-Wish Foundation of the Texas Gulf Coast and Louisiana gets hundreds of requests a year but has had just seven quinceañera wishes in 24 years, said Cathy Anderson, speaking for the organization. After hearing of Abigail's dream, Make-A-Wish lined up donors, including the banquet-hall owners, a dress maker, a baker, a limousine driver, a photographer and others. Quinceañeras are not simple events. They can take months of planning and can easily cost $10,000. In fact some families are known to take out loans in order to pay for the event.
