No Need to Ditch Limousine Rides
The black Cadillac is gone! Welcome to era of the green limo. The new Greens leader, Nick McKim is taking a personal stand and ditching his tax-payer funded chauffer and limousine in an effort to combat climate change.
As the leader of a political party, Mr McKim is entitled to the use of a driver and limousine. But, unlike his predecessor Peg Putt, Mr McKim is sticking with his hybrid car; he says the government-supplied limos emit far too much greenhouse gas for a leader of a climate-conscious political party like the Greens.
McKim says that in this day and age, with the need for urgent action so strong, he cannot in good conscience continue to utilise a car that is a 6-litre, V8, two-tonne vehicle. He claims that a non-environmentally friendly limo emits more than three times the carbon than the hybrid car he currently drives.
The Green’s leader wishes that any savings that result from his decision, be invested in planning for Tasmania's public transport future. McKim claims that public transport is cool transport; it is emissions-friendly and that it helps to build communities. He says climate change is one of the most pressing problem facing humanity and that leaders have to lead by example.
There is no doubt that climate change is an important issue and that it affects everyone. And, while the State Government is delaying its plans to convert its limousine fleet to hybrid technology for at least two years, until a low-emissions car is produced in Australia, you don’t have to go without to feel good about helping the environment. There are plenty of environmentally friendly limos you can hire. In fact, many limo hire companies have fuel efficient limos as well as hybrid cars in their fleet.
However, not everyone is convinced by the McKim’s sincerity. The Infrastructure Minister Graeme Sturges, who recently gained a chauffeur and limousine when he was promoted to the front bench, dismissed the Green’s leader actions as tokenistic, claiming that it was a political stunt.
